Yachting Yarns
Greetings from the Commodore,
We already are a busy club and we have not club activities yet. I can’t wait!
A club membership meeting was held March 27th, 2010. The purpose was to present for approval the Locker Room Sewer Line Repair. The background, options, and the recommended solution were presented by Bill Albers and myself. The preferred and approved option was to run both a new sewer line and water line and to install a new grinder pump. The sewer and water lines would run across the bay through Pete Breidenbach’s slip to the Burkhart Easement.
The new pump to be installed in a new location approximately 10 feet to the west of the current pump. The current pump pit would be filled in and covered completely. Vogel’s Plumbing was the chosen contractor.
This was a turnkey project to be completed by the end of April.
The approved cost is $19,100. I am pleased to report at the time of this writing (4/13/10) that the project is well on schedule if not ahead. The lines are run and the pump is installed. Many thanks to Bill Albers for his activities in overseeing this project. Also, thanks to each of you who attended. I was needlessly concerned about having a quorum.
The 2010 Skippers Meeting was also held on the 27th with racing rules and racing schedule were presented by Dan Graf and approved. I encourage those of you who are not racers to give it a try.
Dan Graf has started retrofitting the new committee boat. Friday and Saturday, he, Pat Tynan, and Dan Ulrich were working diligently. Looking forward to having the boat ready for our first race in May! The new boat is going to be so comfortable I may even opt for race committee instead of racing (I might).
Bill Albers continues making tremendous progress with the Club House and Locker Room. Jim Fremder has been a major help as well. I think you will enjoy seeing the Freshly painted Club House! Great progress is being made with the clean up of the Locker Room. Many thanks Bill and Jim!
Opening day will be Saturday, 4/24/10, We will have quite a bit to do, so your attendance will be needed. Don Rose will be making a special soup like last year. Please bring some basic yard tools just in case.
The Boat Storage lot needs to be addressed this year. We are planning to clear the west side along Chase Ave to provide parking for club events. While looking at ways to do so, it has been discovered that several boats are being stored with payments being made. We are sure this is an oversight. If you are aware that one of your boats fits please notify Anda (Secretary) or Joe Ewing (Lot Master) with your plans to catch up payment. There will also be activity to notify those owners requesting the same.

Marketing Our Club : from Vice-Commodore Chip Woods.
Over the last several years, we have been doing a great job exposing our club and sailing to people new to sailing and perspective members by touring visitors around the club house and island or hosting the Get Out & Sail events. While I believe our members are truly the greatest asset of ILYC, we must do more to keep the club in our visitor’s minds so they remember us and want to make the time to come back. To this end, I am calling on everyone to do there part so that we can stay in touch with our guests. The next time you are in the club, please notice the guest book binder underneath the bulletin board. If you notice someone the grounds you don’t recognize, introduce yourself, shake their hand and show them around. As you are hosting a visitor, please have them sign the guestbook – being sure to get their home and email address so that we may follow up on there visit. This small act not only puts a face to ILYC but gives us the opportunity to court potential new members.
Status of the club’s Membership:
At this point we don’t have an exact count because some people are late with paying or
are not sure if they will be members this year. We will advise you in May of the status.
Greg & Barb Dillon (aka Barb Anderson) and her husband have joined our club as full members. We welcome them on board.
Winter Boat-Storage:
The Commodore indicated in his greetings that there are several boats stored in the
Winter Storage area that have not paid for parking during the last winter.
An inventory has been made of all the boats and the associated owners. We appreciate payment from these owners. In the back of the 2009 Member Handbook,
the Trailer Parking, for the winter, is listed for $ 37.00. An invoice will be send to
the boat owners involved.
The condition of the Brentlinger Lot has deteriorated and will be cleaned up by the Lot Master. It started to look like a boat scrap-yard. All boats on the west side of the Lot will be moved and the Lot’s West Side prepared for parking. The situation with the abandoned Sunfishes is being investigated on how to dispose of them. The club should not accept old boats from owners who don’t know how to get rid of it and dump them in our club.
The Brentlinger Lot is an extension of our club and needs to be taken care of.
It affects our image. The same applies to our Sunfish racks.
Docks, Lifts and Shore Boxes.
Last fall we lifted broken boat lifts out of the water and laid them on top of the docks. The cables were broken and the lifts aparently are not used any more. It was unsightly all these broken lifts. They are still on top of the docks at present time and we hope they will be fixed soon.
No decision has been made at this time on how to improve the situation with the broken lifts, in the unrented docks, in time for the regattas.
Note:
ILYC Rules and Policies on Docks : Rule # 30 & 34 applies.
Shore Boxes: Rule # 9 applies.
(3) members violated the box dimensions and type last year.
(2) of these (3) members are in the process constructing new
boxes to be in compliance with the rule.
House and Grounds Information:
Sewer & Waterline
The new Sewer and Waterlines are installed and operating. Everything is burried in the ground. There is a concrete lid over the fiberglass tank in the ground.
The process of boring 470 ft. under water and thru soil from our club to the manhole and watervalve at the Burkhart Easement was a challence for the drilling contractor.
The 6”bored hole passed at 10 ft below the top of the seawall in the middle of dock 31
( Anderson’s old dock) then travelled upwards to align it perfectly with the sewer tank outlet. This was a change from the original plan to come thru Pete Breidenbach’s dock space.
See the picture stored in the attachment named ILYC Water and Sewer location. It indicates how the lines are routed.
The contractor, Vogel’s Plumbing did a suberp job excavating, laying all the pipes, restoring the excavated areas and coordinating with the efforts of the subcontractors.
The project has now been signed off as being completed.
Locker Room clean up.
We are in the process cleaning up the locker room areas.
15 of the lockers which are against the South wall, bath room side, have been removed from the area to create more space in the locker room. We know several of the remaining ones are rented out but we are hoping that the renters will be willing to relocate to the lockers on the other sides.
We will modify all doors on these lockers (on the other 2 sides) so a lock can be placed on them.
The Grounds Chairman will contact each renter on their next visit to the club to talk about
the changes. We appreciate each renter’s cooperation.
Club House Storage Shed
The Trustees approved the remodeling of the shed, which is in poor shape, allocated the necessary money for the repairs. The repair will be done by the club.
We hope to see some activities in the months to come.
Club House
Many of the members have seen the face-lift of the inside of the club house. As one member stated, we were overdue on having such an improvement because we were embarrased to bring guests to the club because it looked so bad. With the better looks of the facility we may be able to recrute additional members and show some pride in our club.
The challenge is how to maintain the condition of the clubhouse.
The kitchen area is used by members, especially the sinks and the stoves. They are often not quite cleaned up after being used. Diny Albers spend hours cleaning oil residu and stains from the stoves. floor and the wall behind it. It is not much to ask that we expect people to respect the condition and clean up behind themselves.
When forks, knives, glasses etc, are used please clean them and store them where they came from.
Hoist in front of the clubhouse
The hoist control station (called pendant) is rusted badly inside. We are lucky it still works. With the Regattas and Interlake Nationals coming up it was decided to replace the controls and also extend the cable length from 7ft to 10ft to make it easier for the control operators.
New aluminum chairs.
The black aluminum chairs on the club house deck are donated by Nick Zettler. In the kitchen we have a tray full of tall glasses, also donated by Nick.
We thank Nick for his generosity.
Opening Day, Saturday, April 24 @ 9:30am with lunch at 1:00pm
Soup is prepared by the ILYC Culinary Soup Specialist Don Rose.
See the attachment for a listing of the work to be done to start the season.
